INCA QUARRY TRAIL TO MACHU PICCHU

Our Quarry Trail to Machu Picchu is one of the most attractive routes in the city of Cusco. When comparing this 4-day Inca Trail to the Quarry Trail, the alternative route is much better and quieter. It’s not crowded with people; it’s more peaceful and safe. The Inca Quarry Trail is one of the routes that connects to the city of Machu Picchu. During the time of the Incas, it served as a shortcut to reach important places like the Salkantay route and the famous Inca Trail leading to Machu Picchu. This route was primarily taken by the Inca messengers, known as chasquis. In Inca times, messages had to reach cities like Choquequirao, Vilcabamba, and Machu Picchu as quickly as possible, which is why we have this Messenger’s Trail

¿Who were the chasquis?

The Inca messengers were individuals who covered the entire Inca territory, from the borders of Chile to the borders of Ecuador-Colombia. They carried messages from the city of Cusco because Cusco, the capital of the Incas, was known as the navel of the Inca territory. Therefore, messages originated from this place to every corner of the Inca territory. These men could cover about 45 kilometers in just 3 hours; they were extremely fast, taking shortcuts to reach their destinations. Thanks to these messengers, the Inca territory expanded rapidly in less than 100 years. The Inca Quarry Trail was one such shortcut to reach Machu Picchu.

¿How much does this route to Machu Picchu cost?

The 4-day hike, including the ruins of Machu Picchu, costs $620 USD. The price includes campsites, round-trip train tickets, a hotel in the town of Aguas Calientes, and entrance tickets to Machu Picchu.

As we walk through this valley, the mountains conjoin at the waterfall of Perolniyoq, approximately 3,300 meters above sea level (masl), where the water allows the nearby plants to grow a green much more brilliant than those on the distant hillsides. Here, we will be able to see snow-capped mountains on the horizon, Arequipa, Veronica, and Onura Punta, regarded by locals as deities. We will walk through high grassland to the Temple for the Mountain Veronica at 3,900 meters about sea level, known as Wakaywillka in Quechua, or Sacred Tears. A gentle descent will take us to our second campsite, Choquetacarpa Pampa, at 3,750 meters about sea level, looking out over the green Sacred Valley at the foot of the black rocks and bright white icy peaks of the Andes.
