Protests in Machu Picchu- News Peru

At this moment, the town of Machu Picchu is in the midst of protests, and the city of Cusco is supporting this demonstration. What is the reason for the protest? The Peruvian government has entered into a contract with a private company called Prida to manage the entire Machu Picchu system, including ticket sales, visitation schedules, guides, and hotels—virtually all aspects of the system are being transferred to private hands. This has sparked protests in Machu Picchu and Cusco. The local community in Machu Picchu wants the State to handle this system instead of a private company. All they seek is for the State to take charge of the management.
  • Have you heard about the privatization of Machu Picchu? This change in management has its consequences, and we have already had similar experiences in the city of Cusco.

THE TRAINS.

Previously, trains were operated by the Peruvian State, with affordable rates for locals and Peruvians. Now, under private control, locals are only allowed to board specific trains, potentially facing mistreatment. The absence of an entity to complain to about possible abuses complicates the situation.

THE PRICE OF TRAINS TO MACHU PICCHU.

Prices have significantly increased since management shifted to private hands. Locals used to enjoy reasonable rates, but now the cost depends on your origin and reason for visiting. With the influx of tourists, the company prioritizes US dollars over Peruvian soles, resulting in exorbitant prices. In the city of Cusco, large agencies and hotel chains benefit from this system, while local businesses struggle to compete. Despite our tax obligations, large foreign companies contribute minimally, which is an injustice in a country where corruption is often linked to leaders. Machupicchu Path, a local company, suggests relying on travel agencies to purchase tickets for Machu Picchu, as there is uncertainty about when the new system will operate or when the doors of Machu Picchu will reopen. For those planning to travel to Peru and visit Machu Picchu, caution is recommended, trusting travel agencies to ensure a seamless experience.
